New approval for the marine industry

We are pleased to announce that Precision Investment Castings have been granted approval by Lloyd’s Register to manufacture investment castings in austenitic stainless steels.

Lloyd’s Register is a classification body which governs the list of approved suppliers for various engineering applications including the marine industry.

Sean Curley, Quality Manager at PIC said; “The approval process included members of our quality, technical and welding team, (pictured alongside Sean above) without whom this approval would not have been possible.

The team was tasked with developing a test plan to prove we could manufacture conforming castings, conducting all necessary manufacturing processes on site in Altrincham. The test plan also covered Lloyd’s Register’s additional requirements to carry out welding and Non Destructive Testing on the castings.

In order to gain the approval we produced various samples and carried out a series of extensive weld and metallurgical tests on the material, including tensile, bend and microstructure examinations to prove that we could meet the Lloyd’s Register Rules for the Manufacture, Testing and Certification of Materials.”

This approval will open up new opportunities for the business, particularly in the marine industry, as few investment foundries in the UK hold this globally recognised approval.
